There are two main ways to help people understand complex ideas.
Approach One: Directive Analysis
In this method, you assume that people lack either the competence or the capacity to connect the dots on their own. You analyze the situation through your own lens, influenced by your perspective and biases, and then present your conclusions to others as facts. Essentially, you are saying, “If you want to understand this, here is the definitive interpretation.”
In this type of analysis, labeling someone as a cheat, vagabond, or dictator is straightforward because you rely on your own mental models, frameworks, and criteria. You present your conclusions because you believe others cannot arrive at these conclusions independently. This approach often positions you as the ultimate authority, expecting your audience to accept your conclusions without question. The “Dhruv Rathee” model is a primary example of this approach.
Approach Two: Collaborative Exploration
The second method recognizes that while people may not fully understand certain issues, they are capable of building their own understanding. Instead of providing them with your analysis, you present the problem and encourage them to explore it. You respond to their curiosity and provide foundational knowledge and supporting tools, allowing them to construct their own understanding through personal analysis. The “Manu Sharma” model is an example of this approach.
The Key Differences:
- Directive Analysis: Positions you as the thought leader or expert who possesses the unique ability to make sense of things. Your role is to deliver ready-made conclusions.
- Collaborative Exploration: Positions you as a coach, mentor, or educator. Your role is to empower people to develop their own mental models, frameworks, and methods for understanding. You help them harness their intellectual capabilities, rather than treating them as passive recipients of your insights.
By adopting the second approach, you move beyond merely entertaining or enthralling your audience – which is often achieved by sensationalizing handpicked items. In the collaborative approach, your focus is on coaching and empowering your audience, helping them unleash their own intelligence and build their own decision-making skills. You treat them as capable individuals who can understand and analyze complex situations if given the right tools and frameworks.
My Mission
This is why I focus on sharing management theories, leadership models, intellectual frameworks, and decision-making strategies. I aim to provide you with the tools to understand and analyze situations on your own, rather than just offering my analysis.
For instance, in cricket, I do share my analysis because of my passion for the game and my curiosity about people’s reactions. However, in most other areas, especially areas that should have a shared understanding, I prefer that individuals decide for themselves. Whether a political leader is a dictator or not should not be for one of us with the microphone to announce. Instead, we should be helping folks understand and appreciate the different types of leadership and authority models, and then have our audience construct their own view of someones leadership style.
I don’t want to impose my analysis based on selected events. Instead, I want to equip you with the understanding of different leadership models and frameworks so you can form your own conclusions.
