On June 15, 2026, I had the privilege of delivering the convocation address to Lambton College Ottawa's Class of 2026 — a room full of international graduates who left home, started over in a new country, and earned this moment through years of grit, especially through a pandemic and its aftermath. I came to Ottawa in January 2003, as one of them. So this wasn't a speech about looking down from some finish line. It was about what I wish someone had told me when I was sitting where they were sitting. The core message: be unapologetically yourself. Not louder. Not more performative. Just more honest, more intentional, and more aligned with who you are and what you stand for. A few things I shared along the way: don't let anyone judge your timeline, don't postpone giving, never compromise on your values, take measured risks with a bias for action, and don't take shortcuts — build a body of work and a reputation you never have to defend. And one closing thought that I hope stays with this class longer than anything else: self-care is not selfish. Congratulations to the Class of 2026. Go on — have fun out there. Strategic Metacognition and Leadership Strategy in a Noisy World | Manu Sharma I keep noticing how easy it is to get pulled into the noise. Everyone talks about leadership strategy, but so much of it feels like motion without clarity. I find myself asking a simpler question. If I cannot see my own thinking, how will I ever guide someone else through theirs. That tension sits with me every day. When I work with leaders and founders, I see how quickly organizational clarity can evaporate. The environment moves fast, teams face pressure, and AI and strategy conversations usually turn into technology wish lists instead of grounded decision-making. I want something different. I want leaders to slow down long enough to recognize their own cognitive blind spots, because without that self-awareness, every decision is reactive. Leadership today is deeply tied to purpose-driven leadership and our capacity for honest reflection. I cannot pretend that certainty exists where it does not. I cannot treat complexity like a distraction. Decision-making in complexity is uncomfortable, but that discomfort is where real alignment begins. When I reflect on my own work, I am reminded that strategy is not a deck. It is a state of mind and a discipline of awareness. I am not offering answers. I am sharing lived experience from years of sitting with CEOs, boards, community leaders, and young founders who are trying to make sense of change. I have made mistakes. I have recalibrated. This reflection on leadership strategy is about noticing that moment before it becomes a pattern. In this narrated piece, I sit with the idea of strategic friction, the small points of resistance that look harmless on their own, but slowly shape trust, loyalty, and attention. I have learned that organizational clarity is not just an internal discipline.
