“A bottle of water can cost 50¢ at a supermarket, $2 at a gym, $3 at a movie theatre, and $6 on an airplane.
The only thing that changes its worth is the “location” and the “appreciation of its value”. So the next time you feel like you’re not being properly valued, you might just be in the wrong place and/or around the wrong people”.
As part of my #LeadershipDevelopment course at Lambton College, I often share this powerful lesson with my students to help them understand the importance of context in realizing their true value.
The lesson? Your value isn’t static; it’s influenced by your environment and the people around you.
Peter Drucker said: “The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.” Recognizing unspoken value is crucial. As professionals, our worth is not solely defined by our skills but also by how and where those skills are appreciated. If you’re feeling undervalued, it might not be about your abilities, but rather the people you are with and/or the context you’re in. Situational Leadership Theory by Hersey and Blanchard emphasizes that effective leadership varies with the situation and the maturity of the team. Your context can greatly influence your effectiveness and value as a leader.
Key Reflections:
– Are you in an environment that truly recognizes and leverages your strengths?
– Do your colleagues and leaders appreciate your unique contributions?
– Are you positioned in a role or company that aligns with your values and goals?
Actionable Steps for Students and Future Leaders (infact for all of us):
– Evaluate Your Current Situation: Are you genuinely appreciated for what you bring to the table? If not, it may be time to reassess.
– Seek Growth-Oriented Environments: Look for roles and organizations that match your professional values and aspirations.
– Network with the Right People: Surround yourself with individuals who uplift, support, and recognize your value.
Remember, it’s not about changing who you are but finding the place where your true value is acknowledged and rewarded. Don’t let a limiting environment dictate your worth. Position yourself where your value is maximized, and your potential is fully realized. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Find an environment where your service and value are truly appreciated.
Let’s elevate our careers by being in the right place with the right people doing the right thing. 🙂
