Over the past two months, I’ve been gradually releasing some of my core strategic documents, frameworks, and models that I’ve developed and regularly use in my strategic consulting and coaching work. A close, trusted friend recently asked me why I chose this path, prompting me to write this post. “You’ve refined this work through years of practice. Why give it away without any expectations?” they asked. My instant reply was, “But I do have a huge expectation: that anyone who picks it up will do so to help others and, especially if they formally use my work, to do so without any commercial benefit.”
I fundamentally believe that hoarding knowledge grants no real advantage. In fact, if someone gains competitive advantage from my work and reaches a point where they can compete with me professionally, then I say:
1. I welcome that wholeheartedly and would derive great satisfaction from their success.
2. I admire that greatly because it demonstrates their real talent.
3. I support that fully because it honors those who willingly and consciously shared their knowledge with me.
I have gained enormously from those who stopped in their path to lend me a helping, often critical, hand. This is my way of making a difference by eliminating the need for others to reinvent the wheel in building a toolset that they need in their efforts to address complex issues and problems.
Throughout the rest of 2024, I intend to intentionally and methodically release all of my strategic toolsets and materials that I own the rights to under a CC-BY-NC license. This will include formal proposal and report templates, strategy frameworks and models, coaching and mentoring tools, teaching and training materials, measurement frameworks, and presentation and data modeling templates.
Together, let’s build a world where knowledge is freely shared and used to uplift others. Let us collectively unleash our knowledge to create equity of opportunity.
